Original 30x30" oil painting.

For this piece, I used oil and acrylics. To add texture I used two mediums: modeling paste and glass beads. I used the modeling paste to add some 'bubble texture' which I then painted in silver oil paint (see photo number 5). I then used glass beads to add some luminescence. When the light hits the bead at an angle, it is reflected and it looks like shoals of fish. Gannets feed mainly in shoals of fish like sardines and anchovies.

To add more light to this painting I glazed it twice.

When I painted this piece I was inspired by a gannet colony we visited years ago.

Lambert's Bay in South Africa is the only accessible spot in the world where you can see Cape Gannets breed. Thousands of birds gather here to breed (see 5th pic for a view of the colony). It is an incredible sight!

I have very fond memories from our trip there a few years ago, when we did our 7-month overloading trip across Southern Africa. Lambert's Bay is 170 miles from Cape Town. I could've stayed there for days just watching and photographing their behavior.

This painting shows their courting ritual, also called scissoring.
